Department Head's Message

Welcome to the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. The department is comprised of an eclectic mix of international faculty with expertise in microbiology, infectious diseases and immunology. We provide excellence in teaching and offer research opportunities in the field of infectious disease and immunity to undergraduate medical and life science majors as well as graduate students. Our ethos is to bridge basic microbiology and immunology concepts with the clinical aspects of infection and immunity. We aim to equip our student with the knowledge and skills they need as clinicians and scientists to face the ever evolving challenges of emerging new pathogens. The areas of research expertise of the faculty include molecular epidemiology and mechanism of antibiotic resistance, mechanisms of bacterial pathogenicity, probiotics, antigen discovery and vaccine development as well as molecular virology.

Research projects in the department:
• Molecular characterization and typing of multidrug resistant bacteria of human/animal origin
• Dynamics of nasal carriage of MRSA in the community
• Identification of vaccine candidate antigens for Chlamydia and Leishmania major
• Identification of novel vaccine adjuvants using dendritic cells
• Antimicrobial properties and toxicity studies of nanoparticles
