Course Description

BEP235 is a 2 credit hours course. It is the first in a series of Evidence Based Medicine courses designed to provide students with basic understanding of biostatistical concepts. The course covers descriptive graphical and numerical measures, probability concepts, hypothesis testing, confidence interval estimation, two- sample t-tests, two-sample nonparametric tests, simple categorical data analysis, correlation analysis and sampling techniques. The course has a lab in which students learn the basics of SPSS, one of the most widely used statistical software systems, and Excel to summarize, analyze and present medical research data. The course promotes self-directed learning, reasoning and problem-solving abilities using basic biostatistical techniques.

Course Description

COM355 is a 2 credit hours course. This course focuses on teaching the principals of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) including epidemiology concepts and main community health research methods. Students learn how to identify and interpret some of the risk factors affecting patients and the community. In addition, students will build their knowledge and skills by working in teams on research projects in the community, addressing health problems and determinants of health affecting specific population groups. Students will learn how to develop a formal research proposal for a community-based research project, how to formally summarize and present their findings and prepare it for submission.
